GENERAL DESCRIPTION
OF THE PROJECT

:
The project is the construction of a 490 m. long and 42 m. wide bridge supported by tubular steel piles. The It also covers the rearrangement of Eminonu and Karakoy squares at each end of the bridge.

The New Galata Bridge comprises four distinct segments; abutments, double-deck approach bridge, caissons being the piers of bascula bridge, and bascula bridge.

The bridge figures in the world Construction Literature in five categories of eminence.

1- For being "The Greatest Bascule Bridge Ever"
2- For the supporting piles constituting in number, diameter, and length, "One of the greatest foundation systems ever"
3- For the 2000 ton vertical load test on these piles constituting "The graeatest off-shore load test ever",
4- For the bascule-bridge supporting caisson structures being "The greatest ever cast-in-situ caissons",
5- For being "The bridge offering the greatest number of units in its shopping compound."

The deck consists of three parts, two of them having 193 m. length are supported by tubular steel piles. These spans are prestressed reinforced concrete double deckers, the upper deck is for the traffic and the lower one is for shopping and sightseeing. The middle part opening bascule span is 81 m long.
